He liked the muted effect it had on his pictures. He used colour Kodachrome film in the 1950s and 60s before it was fashionable – the Museum of Modern Art in New York didn’t show an exhibition of colour photography until 1976 – this film was expensive and so Leiter would buy stuff that was past it’s sell-by-date. The lesser-known artworks created by Saul Leiter would be his Abstract Expressionistic paintings, usually depicting photographs of nude women, layered over with bright, almost fauvist colours. Leiter was a mid-century, New York street photographer who started out as a painter and went on to be commissioned by Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue and Elle. New York, fashion, photography – I’m there. Feeling in desperate need of inspiration, myself (it’s true what they say about all work and no play), I took myself along to a preview of the Saul Leiter exhibition at The Photographer’s Gallery. Beautifully shot by the cinematographer Ed Lachman, Carol was visually inspired by the work of the late photographer Saul Leiter. If you’ve seen the Todd Haynes’ film Carol these pictures will feel very familiar. Both books were vastly different, yet both were so creatively wonderful, it made me feel inspired to write again and, for that, I've developed a respect and utter gratefulness towards Colleen, herself. Lately, I've been reading some Colleen Hoover books (first I read It Ends With Us, and then Verity). Books have always been my escape from physical reality, ever since I was in elementary school. Sometimes I have days that just feel like a complete smack in the face with realizations that have the capability of stopping me in my tracks - and today has been one of those days.Īs I've mentioned before, I've wanted to prioritize different parts of me that I haven't given space to exist freely recently. It’s the most important part of the writing process because it’s when everything comes together and finally takes form as a finished project, but taking notes and applying them and deleting things that you love is just so painful for writers. The more you learn or invent about your world or characters the more creative pathways you’ll be able to fluently come up with! One of the most difficult parts is definitely after the drafting phase. And there is no more satisfying feeling than to give voice to these interesting people we are creating-and definitely in an inclusive way that makes everyone feel a part of the story! The most frustrating part is when you’ve written your characters into a corner and you have to get them out, which we all know as ‘writers block’ but there is an easy way out, which is just do research, research, research. We LOVE to develop fun and quirky characters. Everything is flowing together, and we are just so excited about the potential of the project.
